christmas craftiness

man, i've been slacking on the blog...

in case you don't remember, i don't believe in buying fancy, expensive christmas ornaments. last year, i bought some super cheap, plain globe ornaments and embellished them myself. so i decided that i will just add on a few more semi-homemade ornaments each year. i have fun doing it and it saves us tons of money, so i might as well make it a tradition.

anyway...i made this year's christmas ornaments back before thanksgiving. i started with these inexpensive wooden cutouts:

then, i added a few coats of white paint, glitter glue, and acrylic gems...and voila! some sparkly snowflakes to add to the tree. my only regret is that i didn't make more. they look really good with the rest of our ornaments.

our other ornament addition this year was a collection of silver stars that i got for 3/99 cents. they were a little plain and kind of rustic looking, so i jazzed them up a bit. (but you can't see the difference too well in the before and after photos...so we'll just stick with the after.)

my biggest christmas craft this year was a wreath for the front door. i actually don't like a lot of wreaths out in the stores, and the few i did like were so expensive. there was no way i was going to drop 40 or 50 bucks on a wreath...i thought to myself, "i bet a can make one for WAY cheaper."

so i did.

i went to the craft store and bought all of the necessary supplies for UNDER $10. then, with a glue gun and a spare half an hour, i whipped up this little beauty:

i think it looks pretty darn cute on our bright red door, if i don't say so myself.

buddy...

i haven't posted about any of my projects for awhile, but i've been hard at work on christmas stuff and a commissioned painting.

brandon's aunt has a dog that she pretty much loves more than her own husband and children. (i'm not exaggerating.) his name is buddy. this summer, when she found out i quit teaching to stay home and make art, she commissioned me to paint a portrait of li'l buddy.

this is one of the photographs i used as a reference...

and this is the result...
(the color on this photo is a bit off because i took the pic at night, but you get the point.)

Buddy, acrylic, 2009

the painting is 11 x 14, done in acrylic. i was a little worried about how it would turn out since a pet portrait isn't something i would normally do, but it only took me 3 or 4 days to complete...it went a lot faster and came a lot more easily than i thought it would.

i was able to give it to her at thanksgiving, and she loved it!

don't worry. they've gotten another dog recently...so i'll be painting that one too. :)

SO EXCITING!

starting in december, i am going to be teaching private art lessons!!!

i have been wanting to do this for awhile...then out of the blue, my friend beckee called me up and asked if i would be interested in doing lessons for her daughter. and now the ball is rolling.

i am SO exited.

no mountains of grading, no pointless meetings, no parent teacher conference, no administration to please, no "numbers" to worry about, no rude people yelling at me, no early mornings or long days, no attendance school, no credit recovery, no kids shoved in my class because the counseling office couldn't figure out what to do with them...just ART and cute little neighborhood kids who actually like art.

best. gig. ever.
